SHOW REPORT PREVIEW 2009

'You have to remember that this is a fun industry. Making a little extra effort to inject your company’s personality into what you’re trying to sell can make a big difference.' John Farrington, Cosmic Video Amusements

DOUBLE FIGURES
A total of ten brand new exhibitors made their show debut at Preview 2009, including the SPP Group, TAB Austria, JPM and thefotos.net.

TWO DECADES OF DIGITAL MUSIC
Jukebox stalwarts Sound Leisure celebrated the 20th anniversary of their first ever digital jukebox at the Novotel event last week.

PREVIEW SHOWS THE INDUSTRY CAN ACHIEVE GRACE UNDER PRESSURE

If there is one element of this business that ought to be lauded from the rooftops, it is its innate ability to deliver the goods when it is under the most intense pressure. Anyone walking through the doors at this year’s Preview cannot have failed to notice just how good some of the product on display really was. And that quality spanned the full coin-op spectrum which shows, quite clearly, that there is still plenty of life left in the business. All that’s needed is for someone to start buying! Chris Murphy, NickNorton, Alex Lee and James Walker report on Preview 2009.

AMG LEISURE
The Final Frontier
Undoubtedly one of the most popular amusement pieces at the show was the Star Trek pusher, one of many first looks to be found on the AMG Leisure stand. As the firm’s Mark Sowray revealed, the new machine had been an instant hit, almost selling out its first production run. AMG also exhibited a host of new gaming equipment, including the latest multi game terminal from Baby Vegas and Gemini Games, as well as Bell-Fruit Games’ reel-to-video version of the classic Cops ‘N’ Robbers AWP.

BARCREST GROUP
Pots Of Inspiration
Barcrest Group, while not officially exhibiting at Preview, had a host of product on display through its distribution network of Crown, Deith Leisure, MDM Leisure and RLMS Sales. Triple 7, naturally, was a mainstay of the firm’s show portfolio with titles including Rainbow Riches Pots of Gold, Mummy Money and Tooty Fruity added to the compendium. Pictured are Deith’s Kevin Temple, Barcrest’s Gareth Scott and Crown’s David Hurst.

BRENT SALES
Clena-Flex Its Muscles At Preview
Mick Kennedy of Brent Sales was clearly pleased with the firm’s achievements at last week’s preview where they exhibited a product range that was as slick and accomplished as it was strong in depth. His response to the show was short but telling. “It has been 100 per cent better than I anticipated it would be,” he told Coinslot. Among the star performers was the Clena-Flex skill game which has been enhanced by some inspirational merchandising and vending configurations. Kennedy is pictured with Clena-Flex.

BELL-FRUIT GAMES
It’s A Steal Of A Game
As AWP titles go, they don’t come much more famous than Bell-Fruit Games’ Cops ‘n’ Robbers. The game’s re-emergence at Preview this year was a welcome development thanks to some nicely executed video updating. You could describe it as an industry classic given a thoroughly modern twist. Pictured with the game is the firm’s Vanda Osinska.

ASTRA GAMES
Pushing The Boundaries
Bridgend-based manufacturer Astra unveiled a radical new concept at Preview called MicroBingo. Aimed at the bingo sector and FECs with a bingo licence, the product is officially an ‘electronic bingo terminal’ but with video reels ‘representing’ the action on the bingo card. Astra will be the first to admit that the radical nature of the game will divide opinion, but it is one of the most challenging innovations to come from the gaming sector for some considerable time. Pictured with the game is its creator, Andy Dinning.

CASHPOINT
Making Inroads Into Europe
Diversified Austrian gaming and betting group Cashpoint continues to expand into new markets. Cashpoint offers turnkey solutions - both software and terminals - and the company’s UK sales manager Brian Marks said the group was keeping a close eye on new legislation in the country, which will allow the development of live betting areas in arcades. “We are trying to offer customers a solution that is unique,” he said. “We are happy to get people out of the bookmakers and into the arcades. And keep them there.”

CMS GAMING
Full House
Bonus Ball Bingo, complete with its latest software, was one of several highlights on offer from CMS. Other attractions included new games for the firm’s multi-player, multi-position Live Roulette Set cabinet and new games for its Chameleon cabinet, as well as the Mini Chameleon, a bar-top version of its larger equivalent, designed for use in outdoor smoking areas at bingo clubs. Commenting on the latter, CMS’s Tom Nugent said: “Riva has actually linked our Live Roulette Set, Chameleon and MiniChameleon up to have floating Category B3 machines throughout the bingo hall. When players go for a cigarette break they can play the Mini Chameleon outside, and this has helped to boost a site’s revenue.”

BRENT ELECTRONIC
Bigger Range For Brent Electronic
Additions to Brent Sales’ Clena-Flex concept have, in turn, brought changes elsewhere, notably for sister company Brent Electronic which has boosted its product range in support of the skill game. “We’ve got a whole range of new prizes and merchandise for stackers and the Clena-Flex system,” said the firm’s Steve Short. “And we’ve got a new line in customised tickets. We’ve spoken to some good people here, the kind of people you would describe as quality buyers rather than browsers.” Short is pictured with colleague Darrell Simmonds.
